Arcade Games Special No.1

As these reposts would be a little scarce by themselves, I've collected a few of the Arcade games I reviewed over at Blog of Stuff into one special post!

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Bogey Manor (Arcade) :

Groovy little arcade game that you won't have a clue how to play at first, which is frustrating, but once you work out you can stop the ghosts with your Bee-Gee-esque disco moves, thus allowing you to smack them with your stick, it becomes a lot more fun!

Anyhoo, run around smashing the mystical orbs and defeating the baddies and bring Bogey Manor crashing to the ground! Some nice platformy fun...

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Escape From The Planet Of The Robot Monsters (Arcade) :

The evil Reptilons have taken the beautiful scientist Sarah Bellum hostage and it's up to our heroes Jake Duke to rescue her and the other captives enslaved by these evil Robot Monsters in this isometric-arcade shooter from Atari...

As you traverse the various levels, you'll have to dodge bullets, rays. homing devices...all manner of nasty stuff chucked your way by the nicely animated enemies. Switches need to be flicked to activate stairs and the like, and you have to be extra careful not to shoot the various hostages that are busy working away for their alien slave-masters! Every now and then you'll get to pilot a little spaceship too for added enjoyment...

There are loads of secrets to be found in this B-movie style blaster, and it's loads of fun shooting everything in sight to see what it does. There's tons of stuff I could witter on for hours about, but as time is short I'll just tell you to seek it out...either in the wild,  via MAME or the retro compilations it's appeared on....even most of the conversions to other computers like Amiga and the good old Speccy....and just give it bash for yourselves! You won't be disappointed....

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Dark Tower (Arcade) :

This one blatantly steals graphic from other games (Ghosts 'n' GoblinsBlack Tiger), nicks the music from Double Dragon and puts them together into something that plays very much like Bubble Bobble, only instead of capturing the baddies in your spit balloons, you smack them over the head with a club! Nothing special, but alright for a go or two...

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Monster Bash (Arcade) :

1982 Sega arcade game where you have to light candles to activate a magic sword, which you then use to defeat the villians of the piece....DraculaFrankenstein and the Chameleon! Be careful though, as they have minions such as spiders and werewolves who'll try to get in your way too...

Simple, addictive gameplay and some spooky sounds make for another classic horror game experience...

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Nightmare In the Dark (Arcade) :-

Some Bubble Bobble/Snow Bros type stuff with this game, although it's a bit better presented than Dark Tower! Very similar gameplay-wise though, as you shoot fire at the baddies until they become a ball of flame which you can then send bumping around the levels to hit other baddies!

It all looks suitably spooksome, and if you like any of the other games mentioned in the paragraph above, you should find this pretty enjoyable too!

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Mutation Nation (Arcade) :

It's time for another wholly-unoriginal-but-still-perfectly-decent scrolly beat-em-up! This one has you battling against some evil mutants that have been created by some nasty scientist chappy....you'll know what to expect if you've played any side-scrolling beat-em-up ever!

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Demon's World (Arcade) :

This one's a freaky-deaky, side-scrolling shooter that sees you come up against various monsters and ghosties, and even features what looks like Jason from the Friday The 13th films...

Your character seems to be loosely based on the Ghostbusters, and you can get various different weapons to shoot the baddies with, including 3-Way-firing guns, Bombs, Laser guns, etc....

Again, it's fairly funky and filled with enough beasties to make it sufficiently scaresome, so go give it a go!

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Tricky Doc (Arcade) :

In this 1987 coin-op from Tecfri you play the role of Tricky Doc as he runs around his labs trying to control all his bizarre creations that have escaped from their cages! You do this by running up and down stairs and zapping them with some sort of monster-bug-spray or by punching them in the face! There are also a few obstacles and pit-falls to avoid...

Not much to say about this one really, as it's all pretty much straightforward platformy fun! Although as the title suggests it's also quite tricky! Still, it's well worth a go or two if you can find it out in the wild.....

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Big Karnak (Arcade) :

This one is a groovy little arcade platformer where you play as a pharaoh out to rescue his lady friend from a big winged creature that's swooped down and carried her off! You'll be using swords, magical scepters and even your good old fists to pummel the creatures between you and your goal...

There's lots of them too! Zombies, mummies, eagles, beetles, cat men, skeletons, snakes....and loads more...all out for your blood! There are lots of traps too in the form of spikes, pits and the usual tomb-like terrors you'd expect to find in Ancient Egypt...

Had lots of fun playing this one, and although it can be a bit tricky in parts, it's only pharaoh 'nuff that you give it a go! HAH! See what I did there? Pharaoh nuff! Hehehe......aheh....ha......*coff*.....sorry....best end this post here, eh!?
